Pirate Festy and Continuing Weld Destruction

Just an update about what's going on.

Weld Convergence last weekend was amazing, we had 150 crew on the Sunday, heaps of wicked workshops and speakers, alot of new faces and a good time had by all. Cheers to all who spoke, performed, and contributed in any way.

Weld news - The grading of eddy spur 2(behind the ghost of the Weld Ark) was finished a couple of days ago. The logging plan is done , and the aggregates marked, so now we wait and see. All quiet for the moment, but expecting this coupe and others to kick off any day. Over in the Upper Florentine, an amazing old growth mixed forest is being trashed as I type.

Pirate Festy - this coming weekend, in Judd's Creek, out the back of Huonville. Check Huon.org/festival for details. Anyone who can help out before, during or after the festival would be hugely appreciated.

Huon Valley Environment Centre, The Derwent Forest Alliance and Melbourne based Beyond Zero Emissions did an action this week targeting the Governments Draft Climate Change Stategy, which is a steaming pile of crap if ever i smelt one. The policy sets no emissions reduction targets, focuses on continuing business as usual and effect mitigation, and, surprise, surprise, completely ignores the issue of logging of native, particularly old growth, forests. This is despite forestry and land use change being Tassie's largest single carbon emitter, and that's with some apparently dodgy accounting. We also got to hassle the Premier at his first public outing for a few weeks (he's been hiding coz he's scared of Bob Brown and needed to devote most of his time to giving John Gay foot rubs).

Come down if ya keen, summer's just kicking off down here, and there's heaps of work to be done and fun to be had.

Take care,
Wazza
